How a parcel clears customs, explained calmly
Updated Sep 1, 2026
Customs is a checklist, not a lottery. What actually happens to your box at the border, why it almost never gets opened, and why on 1VIM there is nothing left to pay when it arrives.
Every parcel crossing a border carries a small stack of answers: what is inside, what it is worth, what it is made of, and a six digit code that tells the customs computer what the thing is. Nearly all parcels clear on that paperwork alone, read by machines in seconds. Inspections are the rare exception, not the rule.
What stops a parcel is almost always the paperwork, not the contents: a vague description, a missing code, an undervalued invoice. And what surprises people at the door is the bill, because with most shops the duties and taxes are collected by the courier on delivery, plus a handling fee for the trouble.
1VIM removes both failure modes. The customs forms are filled from the listing itself, the six digit code included, and the duties and taxes are part of the price you paid at checkout. The courier rings the bell to hand you the box, not an invoice.
